Geelong West has a successful weekend at the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Brass Festival

On the weekend of the 15th/16th and 17th of November 2013, Geelong West Brass Band made the trip over to Mount Gambier to participate in the annual Blue Lake Brass Festival.

The band marched 3 times throughout the weekend - in the Official Marching Inspection (featuring Deb Stallard DM, first time completing the Drill and Inspection) who did a magnificent job. The band was placed 2nd over all grades for the march. The band also participated in the massed band march, and the televised WIN Christmas Parade. The band dressed up in the Bon Bon costumes, and managed to win "Best Brass Band" on the Christmas Parade. Well done to all those who participated.

Later on that evening, the band performing their repertoire in the A Grade competition. The band played the hymn "In Perfect Peace," their Own choice test was "Between the Moon and Mexico" and their on stage march was "Mercury." For their Entertainment Item, the band featured "The Village Idiots" who were a great hit with the audience. For the scores of the items, please see the Results page of the website.

The band was awarded the Murray Johnson award for the most moving hymn across all grades, and also received the Frank Thompson award for the best stage march in A Grade.

I'd like to thank the committee for their hard work in getting the band to Mount Gambier and making it such an enjoyable weekend. Thanks also go out to Jeff Steele MD for his hard work and preparation of the band in the lead up to the competition. To our GWBB friends and helpers - a huge thanks goes out to you guys. A final thanks to Deb Stallard for working tirelessly in perfecting her skills to carry out the Drum Majoring - and doing the great job that she did over the weekend. A big thanks also to the other bands who attended, the Lions Club of Mount Gambier for organising the weekend, and all the people who made the competition possible.
